Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is committed to strengthening diversity, equity, and inclusion in our workforce, with our partnerships, and through our work. IPA has implemented more than 800 impact evaluations — alongside an extensive network of researchers from all across the world — to understand which interventions are most effective in the fight against poverty. While we work with various research institutions in our countries of operation, we recognize some barriers that make it difficult for researchers from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to access funding, research networks, and even academic preparation.

In an internal Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) diagnostic, we identified that only 27 percent of our research network comes from LMICs. We believe that when our research network better reflects the diversity of the communities in which we work, the quality, relevance, and impact of the generated evidence will be strengthened. As such, IPA is committed to diversifying its researcher network through three main pathways: Building a network of LMIC national and based researchers; Enhancing access to funding for LMIC researchers; and Promoting pipeline development of LMIC researchers within our country offices.

  • Contribute to defining IPA’s Researcher Diversification Strategy and collaborate with CDs to define country-specific implementation plans
  • Support IPA country offices in partnership development with local research institutions
  • Promote best practices and define guidance and templates and take the lead in sharing them with Country Offices through formal and informal training and other means of communication
  • Map initiatives conducted by other institutions in the field of LMIC researcher’s engagement, identify synergies and complementarities and initiate partnerships

  • Collaborate with IPA’s sector programs and partners to facilitate LMIC’s researchers’ applications to our competitive funding calls
  • Ensure strong coordination between various IPA teams, including country offices, sector program teams, Research and Methods teams to deliver on Researcher Diversification Initiative
  • Develop concept notes, budgets, and proposals for continued funding for LMIC-related work
  • Monitor the finances and operations of the Researcher Diversification Initiative to ensure on-time and on-budget delivery
  • Support with drafting internal and external communications (emails, blog posts, articles)
  • Coordinate virtual and/or in-person training and events with coordination, planning, and presentation drafting and support

About IPA

Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is a research and policy nonprofit that discovers and promotes effective solutions to global poverty problems. IPA brings together researchers and decision-makers to design, rigorously evaluate, and refine these solutions and their applications, ensuring that the evidence created is used to improve the lives of the world’s poor. In recent decades, trillions of dollars have been spent on programs designed to reduce global poverty, but clear evidence on which programs succeed is rare, and when evidence does exist, decision-makers often do not know about it. IPA exists to bring together leading researchers and these decision-makers to ensure that the evidence we create leads to tangible impact on the world. Since its founding in 2002, IPA has worked with over 600 leading academics to conduct over 830 evaluations in 52 countries. This research has informed hundreds of successful programs that now impact millions of individuals worldwide.
