Org. Setting and Reporting
The post is located in the Engineering Unit, Facilities Management Section (FMS), Central Support Services (CSS), Division of Administration, at the United Nations Office at Geneva. The Associate Engineer (Audio visual) reports to the Chief.
Under the supervision of the Chief, Engineering Unit, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
(a) Operations and promotion of continuous improvement of the Unit’s performance.
• Prepares operations of design, network management, infrastructure maintenance and audiovisual workflow management;
• Provides designs, deploys and manages an audiovisual network architecture over IP;
• Deploys remote production systems, manages and administers media servers, ensures the design and / or adaptation, configuration and deployment of computer stations necessary for the entire audiovisual production chain in compliance with technical standards and quality procedures in effect and ensures the reliability and maintenance of the audiovisual IT installations deployed;
• Supports technology watch and participates in hardware and software investment projects for the production and distribution of audiovisual media;
• Continuously coordinates and communicates with ICTS colleagues and assists with the configuration;
• Ensures technology transfer from external companies to the Unit’s technical staff;
• Assists the Audio-visual Supervisor in the oversight of repairs and maintenance actions undertaken by the Audiovisual team and defines appropriate corrective actions;
• Assists in managing external companies that provide audiovisual services and equipment to ensure the maintenance, repair and replacement of audiovisual installations;
• Provides technical and logistical support to the staff of the audiovisual sub-unit;
• Suggests, organizes and implements in collaboration with the Audio-visual sub-unit, the actions to improve the audiovisual installations which will allow to increase the life of the installations, to improve their availability and to adapt them to the changing needs of the customers;
• Participates in the development and implementation of the Unit’s technical and organizational work standards;
• Participates in the development of training plans for Unit staff;
• Coordinates his/her work with that of other Unit staff members and the Unit’s activities with relevant external parties (Buildings Unit, Information and Communication Technology Service, clients);
• Carries out performance analyses and suggests and implements corrective action as part of the continuous improvement process.
(b) Client relationships – Development and implementation of capital improvement and maintenance plans.
• Provides, as necessary, the interface with other technical stakeholders of UNOG (Division of Conference Management (DCM), Information Service, Information and Communication Technology Service (ICTS);
• Gathers of data, analyzing and anticipating evolving needs of the Unit’s clients;
• Identifies and clarifies with the client the real needs and determines the appropriate solutions;
• Conducts inspections of the technical infrastructure of the Palais des Nations and its annex buildings;
• Monitors technological developments and keeps abreast of changes in standards and new technologies;
• Writes and/or participates in the drafting of the specifications for the purchase of services or goods;
• Writes and/or participates in the drafting specifications for capital projects which might include audio-visual equipment and systems such as sound systems, simultaneous interpretation systems, recording systems, audio-visual systems, telephone listening system for conferences, measuring devices, audio connection necessary for listening to conferences;
• Analyzes tenders and drafts procurement recommendations;
• Monitors Technical and financial facilities;
• Monitors the performance of external contractors;
• Assists in preparing maintenance plans.
(c) Contributing to the Strategic Heritage Plan (SHP) on all technical aspects as required:
• Communicates with SHP and FMS operational expert to provide technical information on existing equipment, maintenance and operations;
• Provides SHP and FMS operational expert with necessary information on maintenance contracts in order to extend or implement new maintenance contracts;
• Ensures information transfer from SHP and FMS operational expert to the FMS team in regard to future installations and equipment;
• Coordinates FMS works to ensure harmonization between FMS project and SHP project;
• Participates with FMS operational expert in analyzing technical design concepts and its impact on future FMS maintenance and operations.
(d) Performs other related duties as required.

Advanced university degree in audiovisual engineering, multimedia engineering, electronic engineering or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of two years of experience in audiovisual engineering or related area is required.
Experience in planning, designing, development, implementation of renovation projects of audio-visual equipment and systems, or related area is desirable.
Experience in the maintenance of audiovisual equipment and systems for conference rooms is desirable.
Experience in project management within a multidisciplinary team is desirable
Experience in the management, deployment and administration of audiovisual solutions over lP (Internet Protocol) is also desirable
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English and French is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.
Extension of the appointment is subject to extension of the mandate and/or availability of funds.
